Single shelves are framed with solid wood to make sure they will stand up to major abuse. The drawer slides have a detent when fully extended that keeps the shelf from sliding in when typing. The framing front and rear forms a lip to keep your keyboard and mouse in place and makes it easier to pull the keyboard out.
